You go through x-ray twice, before entry to the check in area, just beyond the terminal entrance. Porters will offer to help, just decline unless you're late, in which case they can be helpful. There's another x-ray check, just after passport control, right after check in. BA also have some manual checks at the gate area, mandated by the UK.
