$0.01/mile is a rough baseline, but the actual numbers can and do vary wildly. Why? Only Delta’s Revenue Management department could tell you that. I booked a nearly $900 flight for 37k miles just a few weeks ago. And I’ve seen other fights like the one you’re talking about with ridiculously bad awards. Maybe they were seeing too many award tickets on the route and wanted to slow it down? Who knows.
