Given the age, I would suggest hanging out in Shinsaibashi/Namba while in Osaka. Lots of young people and trendy places. Same goes for Harajuku and Shibuya in Tokyo. Teens generally prefer those places over historic Nara/Kyoto, though they still probably want Instabai moments in historic places too.
Also consider a side trip to Miyajima while in Hiroshima. Hike up to the top for the the views (30-45minutes).
