Most foreign-branded food and retail operations in Japan are set up so that the bulk of the profit is repatriated in the form of a royalty for using the brand, rather than a dividend to the shareholders. In many cases the Japan operation is owned by locals and the foreign brand owner has a minority interest (e.g. McDonalds) or even no equity at all (e.g. Disney).
