Bit curious why can't you pay for it? I had two bookings for Economy Light, I was given the option to assign my own seat for free (as OWE) on cathaypacific.com and pay for my travelling companions (I didn't take it up)?
P.S. I don't have any Economy light revenue bookings left, but I checked whether can I select extra legroom seats on an Avios booking with CX (I can).
