Situation w/ Priceline where hotel is cancelled w/o notice to customer

Has anyone on here had an experience like the following: Room booked and paid for via Priceline in November 2022 at a major chain hotel in a major U.S. city. Customer shows up at hotel to check-in on date of stay (January 2023). Customer informed flatly by hotel front desk that the reservation has been cancelled by the property and customer doesn't have a room (and, in fact, the property is now "overbooked"). Customer told by front desk that notice was given to a company called hotelbeds.com (which, from what I can find, is a company that purchase hotel inventory to resell to companies like Priceline). Customer given phone number to call hotelbeds.com to sort it all out (this happened on a Saturday so you can imagine how easy it would be to get a live person on the phone).
