It is reasonable to assume that someone (or some group) at Delta evaluated the number of existing and potential members who would achieve each level, and the costs of supporting those members vs the income likely to be generated as a result of maintaining the program. It is likely that the jump from 2MM to 4MM was an intentional decision - that there was a *reason* that they didn't want to give Platinum to 3MM.
I realize that they are not as smart as us customers about running an airline, but what reason, other than "I would benefit from it" would there be for making that change?
You are making a blanket assumption that these are black-and-white issues when they are not. Do you not think that with any changes to the program that there is a big debate within Delta on its ramifications and many people who dissent on what the final outcome ends up being? Of course, it is their candy store. But sometimes the attitudes and metrics change. Delta required M fares to be upgraded for international flights for a long, long time. It was crazy unpopular. But they stuck with it until they didn't. I am so old I remember when L fares couldn't be upgraded domestically. It was crazy unpopular. They stuck with it until they didn't. Upgrading an award ticket....I never thought I would see a day that would be allowed. Food in the SkyClub...gasp. And non-expiring SkyMiles.....just wow.
They may be right on the MM program. I don't think they are. It may change or maybe it won't, time will tell, maybe a lot of time.
