You could also go to Manage Reservations yourself with his trip ID and his name and add upgraded boarding I believe.
Doesn't even need to go to Manage Reservations first. Either on desktop southwest.com, or on mobile device, he just needs to go to checkin and enter the confirmation # and passenger name.
If they are all on one reservation, he can check them all in at once.
