There's no evidence of anything messy, drippy, liquid, or anything else from the OP - all we know is that it was food. It could have been chips, snack bars, or olives in brine in a leaky ziploc bag. We don't know. The OP simply put a permitted piece of hand luggage in the overhead bin, did not take his/her shoes off and put them on the seats in front, did not start clipping nails flying around - the OP did what we all do, save the precious few who knows of a testy FA's potential rule du jour. I prefer not to put my food on the floor, even with the special protections of a plastic bag around it.
