The iPad is really an amazing way to bring your own entertainment. With a small phone/tablet holder the positioning is really flexible. That said, I always scan the IFE for any newer movies that are worth watching. The problem is that the quality of the IFE screen never is as good as a modern iPad. Sometimes the IFE screen is a little bigger (especially in premium cabins), but much worse contrast on the IFE screen.
