When I was a kid living in NYC in the first half of the 60s, my friend once asked me to join him for lunch at a White Castle. I had never eaten at one before but their restaurants were all over the place. I don't think they ever entered Japan -- but it seems they did enter China. My guess would be that the taxes on corporate earnings leaving Japan made the decision pretty easy not to open....
