All of the internet systems on mainline aircraft are satellite based. Being over land isn't an issue, just the coverage area of the service.

The ViaSat system in all 737 MAX, and some 737-900, aircraft is the most reliable. The Thales has more issues. My fleet doesn't have any Panasonic airplanes so I don't know too much about its performance.
