Only downgrade path for Gold is the Green, which still has $150 annual fee. It'll be up to OP to decide if the annual fee is worth it for his family's spending pattern.

The other alternative will be to get another MR-earning card (even the no annual fee ones) or the amex checking account to keep the points.
