It's fairly standard to be escorted to the bar while waiting and then to your table in decent restaurants in London. Pagers are more used in casual restaurants. Of course, there's a benefit to the restaurant in seating you at the bar as you're more likely to order a nice pre-dinner drink that you may not otherwise have had.
I am guessing that you meant to educate and not offend. But, yes, I am well aware of how 'decent' restaurants work. My point was that this was an experience that my frugalness normally would not allow. And I should clarify that my pager reference referred to the US, even at some 'decent' restaurants.
