I'm visiting places in japan in 3 weeks where I would like to rent a car and just realized that my drivers license will expire 4 days after the end of my trip.

I've already submitted my application for renewing the drivers license and am planning to go into a DMV in California on Monday but am concerned that they'll give me a temporary license and force me to wait for my actual drivers license to arrive in the mail which may not arrive in time. Would my current license be valid at AAA to get a international driving permit in the event that my new license does not arrive in time? Also, would it be faster if I told the DMV to get me a Real ID or a non-Real ID?
