It then compares it to the information it has online, then you look at the camera and it comes your photo with the data in the passport.
We know that is how it should work, but there is a scanner there. Presumably for when the chip fails to talk or the database connection fails or whatever. Some here have tried various techniques to make sure the page can scan properly. My experience suggests the page scan is not important, or at least not always.
