You will be set a membership year which initially lasts between 12 and 13 months. The actual duration is dictated by the date you join. For example, if you sign up on 12 January, your year end will be 8 February the following year. Similarly, if you join on 24 October, your year end will be 8 November the following year. After your first year has passed your membership year cycles in more regular 12 monthly intervals.
Therefore if you want your travel companion to have a year end date of 8 April she should sign up some time between 9 and 30 March.

I will sign her up sometime in late March. We fly out mid April, so hopefully the worst outcome is that she ends up with a May 8 end date going forward if it depends on first flight credit. That should be enough overlap in accrual dates
