Well here is an update. I called in again and they said I will get my late fee of $29 back when the statement closes. However, they will not waive the finance/interest charges and it sounded like it was a "computer says no" situation where they did try to waive it through whatever backend process but it would not let them. I was able to get my forfeited points back without paying any fees though. So 2 out of 3 requests granted. Not going to press any further on the interest charges as I did speak with higher-level reps to no avail.
That's irritating to hear, although I can appreciate that you have probably already spent the value of the interest charges in time on calls trying to get it back. I wouldn't think it's a primary objective for Amex to make customers feel as though they're playing "gotcha" with them, and nailing you for interest
on a single day of aging and then making you call multiple times to get two penalty fees and interest waived. Folks should pay their bills on time, yes, and I suspect you'll endeavor to not make this mistake again, but it still doesn't leave a good taste in one's mouth.
