If this had been a paid ticket, they would have changed your flight to the previous day without hesitation as it is a major schedule change.
With award tickets, they are extremely stingy. I would call and explain the situation and hope that the agent is good enough and, if there is no availability straight up, would suggest checking with the other department to see if they could open a seat for you. (Also, if you have vouchers, you could tell Janica that you are ready to use a voucher if it is easier to get U availability rather than X.) Of course, if there is availability on the day before, then changing the flight is not a problem at all.
What happened with LIS, is it not an overnighter anymore?
