It really depends. Domestically miles are very difficult to use for upgrades (and a very poor value as well) and even if you waitlist them, they will not likely clear. Some routes will be 'fees' beyond the miles needed, these tend to be premium routes.
Miles are best used for award travel; UA can have very competitive Y award rates
