Has anyone had experience with getting the interest part waived?

Good luck with this. Maybe ask for a manager.

As a long time customer with nary a late payment, they should waive the fees and interest and you should expect them to waive the fees and interest (presuming you notified and requested quickly). Agree completely with calling, politely, asking for a manager or HUCA if no joy. Just like (some) auto insurers have “accident forgiveness”, businesses should have “late payment forgiveness”. Don’t worry at all about being “that guy”, the CC issuers, particularly AmEx, are “that guy” all the time, turnabout is fair play.
