I would suggest looking at the Timbuk2 Copilot in Small (42 L and 7.0 lbs) and Medium (50 L and 7.7 lbs) sizes. If you're in San Jose, you can go to outlet in Livermore and (maybe) see in person. They're not expandable, but the wheels are super smooth rolling.
