I had this situation - I was on an intercity bus between Singapore and KL - 8h journey. Like you I do carry a spare headset. So a pax - Chinese Singaporean in his mid-50s was watching a movie in Mandarin at full volume while seated in front of me.
I offered him a headset. He looked at me, took the headset, put it in his pocket, and continued watching the movie at full volume.
