I suspect the seat blocking in the back is probably to help them keep families together. There have been a lot of complaints from families buying BE type fares on airlines and then not having seats available together at seat assignment time and airlines have been facing pressure to come up with solutions to this. Note that the blocking can sometimes vary by route. Below is for BOS-SEA and SEA-HNL flights on same A321neo equipment.
