You're paying for more than just seat selection with main vs. basic. But you have the ability to see the seat map before you book. If selecting a seat is that important, you can see that there are no seats available to select and either choose a different flight or go without a seat selection and keep monitoring the flight to see if one opens up.

I'm really not sure what you expect here. Do you want Delta to not sell main when there are no selectable seats? That would be terrible, especially for elites who'd get zero benefits. I sure don't want that.
