NJT bus route 62 test run & update

Eager to see the new Terminal A (landside only today; airside will have to wait), NJT bus route 62 dropped me off at new Terminal A approximately 19 minutes after departing Newark Penn Station. It ran as advertised.

As with many US airports, the public transit bus stop at new Terminal A is located along the furthest curb from the building front door. At the old LGA Central Terminal, the public transit bus stop was located at the curb nearest to the front door and auto drop off was at the furthest curb.

At new Terminal A this means the bus has to take a different roadway path from those vehicles going to the nearest curb. Unfortunately this path also has at least three traffic signals that a private car would avoid.

Later, I timed the walk from the baggage claim level (ground floor) to the AirTrain P2 station as taking approximately 9-10 minutes.

The travel path is as follows:

1. From the baggage claim, take the escalator one level up to the skybridge connecting to the new parking garage (and future ConRac). The skywalk itself is relatively long.

2. Then take the elevator down to ground level (escalators are also possible, but today they were blocked off).

3. There is a climate controlled walkway at ground level to Station P2. The last 100 yards or so is outdoors with a canopy. The 9-10 minutes timing was to the ground floor entrance of P2 Station now rebranded as Terminal A Station. Allow additional time for riding the escalators or use of the elevators up to the AirTrain platform level.

Returning to new Terminal A, I sampled the P2 to Terminal A shuttle bus.

The driver said they operate every 10 minutes which matched my timings of their afternoon bus departures. But this website https://newarkairport.com/announceme...-a-travel-tips states the shuttle buses operates every 5-7 minutes. I observed two bus departures; both were full and during peak periods they may struggle to accommodate the number of transferring passengers from AirTrain.

The trip from P2 station to new Terminal A upper level drop off took 2 minutes, or less than the 4 minute journey time signposted.
