Among several of my 1K friends in China who got their status extended, none of them has any PP beyond 1/31/2023.
They receive no fresh PP for this extension.
They have flown UA very little, thus do not compete with most UA flyers for upgrades or overhead bin space.
By granting status extensions, UA is giving them incentive to fly UA again when China opens up.
I would go a little further. UA should extend those 1Ks whose primary (e.g., >80% of total PQPs) route prior to the pandemic is USA-China. A lot of Apple employees would be in this category.
I have a friend in this situation and I encourage him to call UA.
