If you're a nervous flyer, as many are (perhaps including the OP) these can be disquieting, and it's worth knowing what they are. Once you can anticipate them you can actually use them to be aware of which phase of flight you're in, which provides a structure that can reduce anxiety.
My dad was a nervous flyer; didn't do it for about 20 years. Lots of holidays in Scotland/Cornwall for us...

But after a while away he went on BA's fear of flying course and said the description of all these little noises was one of the most helpful things about it. All the pings and the dings, as well as the more mechanical noises; that sort of staggered creaky sound it makes (I think) when flaps extend being a particular one he didn't like. Just knowing what they are etc.
