Why do BA sell flights with tight connections?

You see lots of posts here from people asking for advice on making tight connections at LHR. Given the onerous requirements to pay compensation for delay, what is the point of BA selling tickets with tight connections, given that it appears to be inviting problems. What is to be lost by saying we will only sell tickets with minimum 2hr connections?

I can see there is less of a problem to places like New York (where there are lots of alternative flights), but for other long haul destinations like SIN or CPT it doesn't appear to make sense. Are there any statistics on how much compo BA pays for missed connections each year?
