Depends on the aircraft and the specifics in the MEL. My recollection from similar on a 737 with an inoperable slide back in the day was that the total number of pax was limited and there was only a certain number allowed to sit within x number of rows of the inop slide. We ended up denying boarding to quite a few and moving lots of passengers around... Not pleasant!
