Nothing that Qatar does is really an investment, unless you mean an investment in their "credibility" as a nation/force as many of their "investments" do not and will not ever earn them any real return in a straight cash sense.
And I think there lie in the issue- whilst most airlines need to turn a profit, ME3 are there to build credibility with little regards to finances. So they can operate low yield routes, spend money on products and attract a cost conscious leisure based customer profile who don't mind detouring via their rolling hubs, which is a very different business model to say, BA.
