Lots of people still transit through London from both the north of the UK and NA. In fact J on the PHL-LHR route is often packed with Pharma people connecting on to India.
I would also suggest but can't prove that the ME and Turkish airlines do so well is price. I have friends who are off to Singapore next week and are going on Emirates in J simply because it was half the price of BA.
