You'd need to consider the type of mechanical problem (scheduled vs unscheduled maintenance) and if AC took all reasonable measures to prevent or minimize "knock-on effects". (But I'm not saying you're in the right or wrong in this situation, it's just not an open and shut case)

Thanks for the link. I would have to think that the fact that my flight was canceled for maintenance reasons around 36 hours before it actually was scheduled to take off suggests that this was not a sudden, unforeseeable safety issue, and that AC should have found it within its capabilities to scrounge up another plane at one of its major domestic hubs in the ensuing day and a half.
