Answering my own question in case this is helpful to others.

I bit the bullet, bought my husband's ticket, and then used the remainder of the flight credit to buy a Wanna Get Away Plus ticket. I immediately cancelled that ticket, and now he has a transferrable credit sitting in his account. We will transfer that to one of our kids' Rapid Rewards accounts and buy their ticket.
