That is the
joy of the JFK lounge elevators — light red means waiting for input and bright red means it is in action.

I take the stairs when able as they are insanely slow and noticed the same thing happen when I was there in December.

Agree. The only other group of pax would be those coming in from South America with onward connections, or those with afternoon flights wanting to spend several hours at the lounge.
