Round trip award J flight booked via ANA but with a third middle leg. JFK-ADD-CPT, JNB-ADD, ZNZ-ADD-JFK. ADD transit layover on outbound and inbound legs.
Outbound: No precheck at JFK. Lounge access was AA Admirals club in T8 which felt like being in an early 90s Denny's, but it's better than crowding by the gate so I can't complain too much. Transit hotel was the external Skylight hotel. I noticed after the fact that our transit vouchers put us under "economy" even though we had J (award) seats, but I didn't think anything of it other than that there seem to have been multiple dining rooms and the one we had access to was packed. On first segment, we were given a tip by fellow passenger to follow the red carpet when flying business, which I thought was a useful tip in a foreign airport.
Return: upon picking out transit hotel vouches at gate for ZNZ-ADD segment, I noticed that vouchers said we had "Tulip Inn" hotel (though they did note we had business class tickets). I googled the Tulip Inn while on the runway and immediately realized how dire some of the reviews were. On landing, we went to transit hotel desk and asked for vouchers for Skylight. The agents talked amongst themselves for a short bit then put us in in-terminal Skylight. The in-terminal Skylight is convenient, but they need to streamline their check-in process for customers who pay to be there. Pray that everyone in front of you for check-in have vouchers. For transit vouchers customers, your checkin will be especially quick if you have physical stub of your previous flight and physical ticket of your continuing flight.
We didn't notice the economy basis of outbound Skylight voucher till after-the-fact, so I can't say whether that was an honest mistake. We don't know why on return, Ethiopian (originally) put us in Tulip Inn and why they wouldn't give us external Skylight vouchers. It's possible the external Skylight was full on that date. However, without any other datapoints, I'd suspect that they have different model and lower priority for business award flight transits.
