I've not found a DND sign to be useful. On the last day they are likely to be banging on your door and trying to come in, because they want the room to be cleaned for the next guest (actually housekeeping doesn't care, but presumably management does).
Prior to the checkout day the only thing the sign does is to alert other guests that someone is staying in the room, as much as I can tell.
