How strict are the hotels about not including young kids in the reservation

I'm planning a trip to Shanghai with my family (wife and 2 kids 5&7). Since they're so young, I'm happy with just booking the cheapest room with 2 twin beds.
For some reason when I enter both kids in, the only option I get is the penthouse suite, and I don't get the regular room option. It's really odd because I do get the option when I select 2 adults and 1 kid, it's only when I add 4th kid.
It's too late for me to question our family's life choices, so I'm thinking about booking a reservation with 2 adults and 1 kid, and playing ignorant and saying I forgot to add the 4th kid to the reservation when I arrive there.

What are your thoughts/opinions? If it makes any difference, I am plat member.
