One of my things is that I think people are underrating hotel points versus airline points. Hotel prices have inflated 50-100% in many cases relative to pre-Covid, and there is no sign they are going down. Point redemption requirements, while up, don't see to be up that much. Airline pricing hasn't had that kind of increase.
Over the holidays, I redeemed 480K Bonvoy points for a stay that would have cost $8,000 at a Ritz Carlton. Similarly I redeemed 95K Hyatt points for a stay that would have cost $2,200.
Looking forward, I am seeing similar or higher redemption values for Bonvoy in Miami, New York, ski towns like Vail, etc.
If I want hotel points, I either need to spend on hotel cards, or transferrable currencies (Amex MR, Chase UR). I don't pass up opportunities to earn 6x Marriott points, and I do some 2x spending on Brilliant as well. But most of my Bonvoy points come from paid stays, points purchases, and an occasional transfer bonus.
It's somewhat a matter of preference, I'm happy enough not staying at a Ritz Carlton, but I definitely like my Intl business class seat, and have made some great award bookings.
