Well, of course, sometimes one airline may have a cheaper flight in one direction, and a different (unaffiliated) airline may have a cheaper flight in the other direction. If you're booking directly with the airlines, you obviously can't book two unaffiliated airlines as a round trip. So in that case two one-ways on different airlines could be less expensive than a round-trip on just one of those airlines.
