IMO DFW was the least odd choice of any. AA had just beefed up (yet again) their domestic network, and the AJB means both carriers consider themselves as one on TATL itineraries. So the A380 was intended to provide a trunk flight between the two biggest AJB hubs, with good connections at either end. In other words, exactly what the aircraft was built for.
Indeed - you could even see BA offering a double A380 service and AA going down to 1 a day. At BOS AA withdrew its daily LHR-BOS run and BA took it over. However, that was in part because AA does not have a base as BOS so had to get the crew up to BOS to then do the service. DFW they have Long Haul Crew stationed so easier.... However, it is again a bit like JNB where it is a big hub so lots of connections so the A380 works well on these routes as frequency is less of an issue.....
