I recall an airliner that was in a holding pattern in the US to burn off fuel before a belly landing - the cabin crew tuned the TV screen onboard to the local news and so the passengers were able to watch their own drama unfold and learn more then what the two at the pointy end was saying
I was on a JetBlue flight from Washington National some years ago, we were taxiing and like many others I was watching live TV about an ‘Active Shooter’ incident in a Naval building across the Potomac. The flight deck announced that ‘as any of you watching TV know’ flights are temporarily delayed as the runway is closed whilst the situation is assessed.
