Quite off topic but something I have thought about more than once!

In Die Hard 2, whilst holding over IAD, they tune into local TV and put that (I think The Simpsons?) on the screens. Historically (circa 1990), was this actually possible? Could an aircraft receive a live broadcast from the ground below?
