Normally you don't buy a much higher priced semi-flexible ticket just because there is a risk of a group member becoming sick (unless one or more in the group has a much higher risk of getting sick). By the cheapest available fare and hope for the best/no sickness.
Normally we don’t buy travel insurance, maybe that is the smarter play and we pay for that here - although I will need to make sure it covers Covid, etc… since not all policies in the US do. Five months out anything can happen and this is for a family event in Israel, so sickness is the only reason we wouldn’t go. It’s just frustrating not to be able to easily see the full fare rules. I would try the hold option as suggested up thread, but even that requires a non refundable deposit for the flights we are looking at.
