There is no waitlisting for cash. And by the book, waitlisting for points should not be possible. But as posted just above you, they ignore now their own rules.
For LH the total should not be the „just cancel and rebook in U“ rate. Oneway U rate is 80k, upgraded X should be 95k (45k + 50k) total.
The points should have been deducted immediately, but sometimes CS forgets* about this. Your upgrade request can go through despite it is not backed by anything. You can just sit and wait and might enjoy a complimentary upgrade.
*I don‘t know where the issue is, but pretty bad that they are not capable of basic accounting
