I’m now convinced this is a replacement for previous years’ quarterly overseas spending promotion. This seems to have been structured in a way to replicate the old promotions but now focusing on EveryMile.

HSBC has messed this up in English though - the promotional language and the T&Cs are inconsistent but the Chinese promotional language matches the English T&C. Taking it all together, this is a quarterly promo.

Here’s the key elements:

This is the main language of the ad. It sounds like you get 6 months to spend $15k to earn the promotional RewardCash rate.

In Chinese, the key part of the equivalent language says: 由2023年1月1日至6月30日,憑滙豐EveryMile信用卡作合資格海外簽賬,
每階段首港幣15,000元之合資格海外簽賬均可賺取低至港幣2元 = 1里,相等於2.5%「獎賞錢」回贈!無需最低簽賬要求

My understanding is that the red/bold/underlined text here refers to spending per phase. Here is an extract from the T&Cs in English, which aligns to this interpretation.

  1. The promotional period for the offer is from 4 January to 30 June 2023, and will be divided into 2 phases:
    1. Phase 1: 4 January to 31 March 2023
    2. Phase 2: 1 April to 30 June 2023
What is the offer
  1. During the promotional period, you can enjoy an extra 1.5% RewardCash rebate when you use an HSBC EveryMile Credit Card (Eligible Credit Card) to make Eligible Overseas Transactions for the first HK$15,000 eligible overseas spending. You can receive a maximum of an extra $225 RewardCash in each phase under this offer.
Ok, so the English advertising language seems wrong. But at least the reality is that it seems to be twice as beneficial… Instead of 6 months to spend $15k overseas at $2 = 1 mile, the T&C says we have two 3 month periods to spend $15k overseas at $2 = 1 mile.

This isn’t as lucrative as the old promotion but I’ll gladly take it on EveryMile given the much wider redemption possibilities.
