In order to retain the points, the redemption stay needs to be completed and posted in member account before the points expiration date.

Member account must remain active in Marriott Bonvoy® with Qualifying Activity to retain Marriott Bonvoy® Points member accumulate. You may refer to our help articles in below linkages for more details about the points expiration and the Qualifying Activity.

To be clear, she said your specific idea would not work, because the stay must be completed and posted prior to the points expiration date.

The Lurker is an official Marriott representative and employee, and helpfully provided explanatory links.
