And lest anyone think this is AA just being awkward BA and IB also have this policy and simply won’t interline on separate tickets - even if it’s say IB-IB.
This is OW policy. Now some OW airlines will interline on separate tickets but that can lead to issues where it gets checked through on one way but not on the other.
Now no doubt someone will come along and say “but AA did it for me last week” but that is an exception and the agent is going against policy and the next time you try it you won’t be so lucky.
