The story: I'd booked DEN-DTW with a change at Midway for winter break. Time to go back, big snowstorm starting up, flights still leaving DTW ok, DEN just fine, but Chicago closed. Any major carrier in the interline agreement would have just routed us directly to Denver or found a different workable connection, but with SW we were SOL. My companion had to get back on time and paid $$$ for a nonstop on United, i stuck around with family another few days til things opened up. Was stressful all around and so unnecessary when the airports we were leaving from and going to were ok, to be borked by a random city in the middle and the lack of cooperation.
Was WN new to DTW at that time? With a limited schedule. It looks like you would now have the option to connect at BWI, BNA and STL in addition to MDW. No different than if I was trying to fly on UA MCO-ATW and there were issues at ORD, ORD is the only way to get to ATW on UA. Highly doubtful UA is going to interline me on DL so I can fly through MSP, ATL or DTW or AA to connect through CLT. Especially not for weather with no status.
