There is a shuttle, it's not walking distance. If the limited shuttle times dont work for you then you can either call a taxi or use a local car services. I think if you want to go to the Monastary one day it is better to use a driver, otherwise you have to get dropped at the visitor center and then take a shuttle to the monastary.
BTW- If you have a day on the end of your trip in Amman, definitely hit the new Ritz Carlton Amman, it's a great property.
